Independent businesses in the Waterloo region struggling with the effects of the pandemic have the opportunity to remind the public that they are open for business. And there is no cost.
You have to buy here WR is a campaign launched by the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Kitchener Waterloo Chamber of Commerce with the help of a grant from the federal government.
All businesses have to do is produce a video on their smartphone of a minute or less and tell the audience who they are, where they are and what they are selling. Then they send it to the chamber which will market it for them.
Greg Durocher, President and CEO of the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce told CBC KW The morning edition, the campaign “is aimed at all small and medium-sized businesses that are struggling to cope, and we want to help them as best we can.”
âIt doesn’t matter who you are or where you are, whether you are a chamber member or not. It has nothing to do with chamber membership,” Durocher said.
âWe want you to make a one minute video and we will provide you with instructions on how to do it. Then upload it to our platform so that we can then distribute it to the community through the webpage. “
The Cambridge and KW Chambers submitted a joint proposal for this campaign to the federal government and the Ontario Chamber of Commerce and secured approximately $ 200,000 for the local strategy.

Durocher says he has heard from many business owners who have gone through a difficult time since the start of the pandemic, but who have done what they need to do to keep these important jobs and businesses open.
“We must remember [the businesses] are truly the beating heart of our community, âsaid Durocher.
“It’s all local dollars that are generated in our community, and we think it’s very important, especially this time of year, and the pandemic, that we have a major campaign.”
The chambers have created a toolkit for businesses on how to shoot video and even provide a sample script.
The You Gotta Shop Here WR campaign runs from October 1 to January 15, 2022.
